On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, it gives me great pleasure to commend Vivian Rinehart as the eighteenth recipient of the Mrs. Grace Glenwood Higginson Lifetime Achievement Award.
With 36 years of incomparable support to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, Mrs. Rinehart has demonstrated an extraordinary allegiance to serve Sailors and Marines. With a compassionate spirit, she has made an enduring difference to many young naval families. Throughout her long and storied career, Mrs. Rinehart has served as one of the most prolific layette contributors in NMCRS history, and her “career highlight” totals are astounding!
As a Layette Items Contributor, she has handcrafted 4,196 individual blankets and quilts, averaged over 116 blankets yearly, and amassed more than 126,000 service hours in almost four decades. Even today, Mrs. Rinehart embraces the opportunity to introduce meaningful and relevant assistance to Sailors and Marines, and models boundless energy to the NMCRS San Diego team.
Her amazing record of accomplishment and loyalty is well reflected in two simple facts: Mrs. Rinehart is the recipient of every Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society Hourly and Presidential Award, and her hourly totals are unmatched by any other Society volunteer. Of note, at the 2014 Volunteer Awards Luncheon, Commander, Navy Medicine West, asked to meet Mrs. Rinehart upon learning of her incredible number of service hours. In the moments that followed, RDML Gillingham presented her with his command coin as a token of appreciation. Truly, her legacy of devotion to service members, their families, and the Society has set a new standard of performance and excellence. In appreciation of achievements spanning 36 years, we are honored to recognize Mrs. Rinehart’s exemplary dedication with the Mrs. Grace Glenwood Higginson Lifetime Achievement Award.
