Loretta Barrett headshotOn behalf of the Board of Directors of the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, it gives me great pleasure to commend Loretta Barrett as the seventeenth recipient of the Mrs. Grace Glenwood Higginson Lifetime Achievement Award.

With 27 years of sustained loyalty in South Carolina at NMCRS Beaufort and NMCRS Parris Island, Mrs. Barrett has devoted her volunteer career to assisting Marines and Sailors. Throughout these many years, she has graciously assumed numerous assignments and accompanying tasks to support the Society’s mission. Client Services Assistant, Caseworker, Recognition Coordinator, Budget for Baby Program Instructor, Layette Items Contributor, and Layette Coordinator – Mrs. Barrett has accrued 60,700 volunteer hours and crocheted more than 1,600 handcrafted baby blankets. She has educated 1,250 families on the costs associated with rearing a child, and provided in excess of $275,000 in assistance to 665 clients since 2002. Specifically, Mrs. Barrett skillfully managed the layette program for 23 years, and successfully guided her team to the completion of 3,500 blankets.

Furthermore, as office staffing decreased, she shouldered increased responsibility as a caseworker and offered invaluable continuity during four staffing transitions. Mrs. Barrett is both a trusted source of NMCRS Parris Island’s institutional and historical knowledge and an enduring advocate for generations of Marines, Sailors, and their families.

Celebrated with every Presidential Society level award, her lifetime of allegiance to NMCRS is well known and respected by all. Mrs. Barrett has committed her adult life not to a traditional monetary career but to the unyielding service to others – and undoubtedly the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society is the fortunate beneficiary. In deep appreciation of her numerous achievements spanning 27 years, we are honored to recognize Mrs. Barrett with the Mrs. Grace Glenwood Higginson Lifetime Achievement Award.
